ISPG Mentorship Program Positions Mentees for a Future in CMS and Beyond
As OIT’s principal defenders of cybersecurity, Information Security Service Officers (ISSOs) play a vital role in safeguarding the health and personal data of CMS. With 160 federal and contracted ISSOs protecting 260 systems, they must continually stay up to date on the latest security tools and practices. To ensure ISSOs are set up for success, Don Bartley, Senior Technical Advisor and Program Lead of ISPG’s Cybersecurity Workforce Support & Training, created the ISSO Mentorship Program in 2015.
The mentorship program pairs mentees with experienced ISSOs to foster professional growth and development. Mentors help mentees overcome challenges and gain confidence in their new role.
Who Can Be an ISSO Mentor or Mentee?
Both new and existing ISSOs can apply to be a mentee to:
- Expand individual knowledge and skills
- Receive support and guidance on new or unfamiliar tasks and projects
- Obtain real-world insight into security and privacy
Non-ISSOs interested in cybersecurity or in transitioning to the role can also apply to be mentored with approval from their supervisor and the ISSO Support Team.
Randy Gyebi, the program’s dedicated mentor, works directly with mentees or pairs them with a mentor from a pool of experienced volunteers. Mentors are ISSOs who enjoy helping others and want to improve their leadership skills and security culture.
