Introducing Human-Centered AI Matrix: Putting People First in Healthcare Innovation
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform healthcare delivery and administration, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is committed to harnessing these technologies responsibly and ethically. Building on the foundation laid out in the CMS Artificial Intelligence Playbook Version 3, the AI Explorers program, led by OIT’s Division of Technical Engineering and Architecture (TEA) is excited to introduce a new resource to help teams across our agency develop AI solutions with a human-centered approach: the CMS Human-Centered AI (HCAI) Matrix.
What is the HCAI Matrix?
The HCAI Matrix is a new tool designed to guide CMS teams in creating AI solutions that will prioritize user needs. It serves as a roadmap for responsible AI development, acting as a guide and posing essential questions throughout the AI development process. The matrix is structured as a 3x3 grid, covering three key stages of AI development:
- Problem Space and Ideation
- Design and Development
- Deployment and Change Management
Significance for OIT
OIT teams are encouraged to evaluate their plans, assess how their AI might impact different individuals, and determine how users and AI will collaborate effectively. Furthermore, the HCAI Matrix fosters teamwork, sparking discussions and bringing diverse perspectives together to ensure comprehensive and well-rounded AI solutions.
